Mumbai-Nagpur ExpresswayUse case

Navayuga Engineering Company Ltd.
Navayuga Engineering Company Limited (NECL) who has been awarded two of the total 16 packages of Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, is an Indian engineering and infrastructure company that provides construction services in the field of roadways, irrigation, bridges, ports, power, marine structures etc.

Some of the major feats of NECL include:

  • The construction of Quazigund to Banihal Highway project. It is one of the most critical projects for India as it ensures all-weather connectivity to north Kashmir through Pir Panjal Pass
  • The construction of the DHOLA-SADIA BRIDGE. It is India’s longest river bridge constructed over the Brahmaputra River, spanning a total of 9.15 km.
  • The construction of the Polavaram Dam Project. It is the most prestigious and challenging project in India with 7.2 lakh acres of new ayacut created for irrigation during phase I and 12 lakh acres in phase II, and another 23.5 lakh acres of stabilized ayacut.

About Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway - Samruddhi Mahamarg

The Samruddhi Mahamarg, also known as the Nagpur-Mumbai Super Communication Expressway, is a partially opened 700-kilometer greenfield expressway that connects Nagpur in the Indian state of Maharashtra to Mumbai, the capital city of the state. The expressway is expected to provide a faster and more efficient route for travel between the two cities, reducing travel time from the current 18-20 hours to just 8-10 hours.

The expressway is being promoted as a major infrastructure project in India, with the goal of boosting economic development in the region by providing improved connectivity and reducing transportation costs. The expressway will pass through several districts in Maharashtra, including Nagpur, Wardha, Washim, Buldhana, Akola, Amravati, and Thane, and is expected to provide access to several industrial and agricultural centers along the way.

Project details

Navayuga Engineering Company Limited (NECL) has been awarded two packages for the construction of the Nagpur-Mumbai Super Communication Expressway. Package 15 covers a distance of 28 kilometers from the village of Vashala BK to the village of Birwadi, stretching from chainage 636.479 to 664.479. Package 16, on the other hand, covers a distance of 36.883 kilometers from the village of Birwadi to the village of Amne in the Thane district, and extends from chainage 664.479 to 701.362.

Typical Cross Section of the project

  • Roadway: The roadway consists of a carriageway, a paved shoulder, an unpaved or earthen shoulder, and side slopes. The median width is 15 meters and has a slope of 1/6 towards the median drain. The camber is 2% for the carriageway and paved shoulder (excluding superelevated stretches) and 3% for the unpaved shoulder. The side slope is defined as 1 vertical to 2 horizontal in cut or fill conditions.
  • Median Drain: The insertion of a drain in the median portion is a critical aspect of the project as the pavement layers extend to the inward median slope.
  • High Cut / Fill Scenarios: As the expressway passes through the mountainous terrain of the Western Ghats, it requires significant cutting and filling conditions. The side slopes in these areas include berms at varying depths.
  • Service Roads: Some sections of the Nagpur-Mumbai expressway have service roads adjacent to the main carriageway, on either one side or both sides. The service roads have a carriageway with an earthen shoulder and a camber of 2.5%. A toe drain is proposed between the main carriageway and the service roads.

OTHER CHALLENGES

Data for the project is collected at each stretch where construction is feasible. However, this fragmented data collection creates a challenge when it comes to processing the information to generate sections.

To overcome this challenge, the NECL utilized AutoPlotter software. By importing the collected survey data into AutoPlotter, they were able to efficiently generate section data using the various options available within the software. This made it possible to effectively process the fragmented data and produce accurate and comprehensive section data for the expressway.
